MEET KATHERINE DUNLAP: GEORGIA DREAMER

We have one thing in common — besides a mutual love of color and dogs— with Charleston artist Katherine Dunlap. The red-headed beauty now occupies our former studio, where she spends her days painting vibrant landscapes, botanicals and dreamy escapes. The Georgia native was kind enough to welcome us into her world.

Tell us about your latest work and what’s inspiring your most projects?!

I’m currently in Palm Springs working on a new series inspired by mid-century modern architecture and the natural beauty of this region.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

I had a professor that recommended the book Art/Work by Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathon Melber. It’s an invaluable resource for those interested in the business side of the art world.

What does ‘success’ mean to you? How do you define it?

Success to me is being able to spend a significant amount of time on something you’re interested in. Even when I was working a part time job and creating art in my free time, I still felt successful because I was able to dedicate so much time to what I was really passionate about, which is painting.

What character traits are you most proud of?

I pride myself on my work ethic and my ability to remain optimistic about the future.

What’s your favorite part about your job/business?

I'm very fortunate in that I'm able to work for myself, so depending on how I’m feeling I can decide for myself what I want to accomplish that day. Whether it be creating art, doing business admin, or even just scheming about potential ideas for upcoming series/releases.

What’s your no-fail go-to when you need to get out of a creative rut?

Change of scenery. Whether that’s a week-long journey or even just a Sunday drive to clear thoughts and find inspiration, I always benefit from that time away.

Your next/dream travel destination. Location + hotel + activity.

This summer, we’re hoping to spend some time in Maine. I’d like to explore the town of Cushing, Maine where Andrew Wyeth lived and worked.
