RAVEN ROXANNE

On any given day, you will likely find artist Raven Roxanne barefoot while floating around her dreamy, light-filled studio in Charleston’s historic district, or playing with her babies on her porch, only a few blocks away. Her impressionist and abstract paintings are largely inspired by the natural elements around her - birds, nests, and flowers are commonly seen swimming in canvases of soft blues, greens, and yellows.

Motherhood has also become an integral part of Raven’s work inspiration. Whether it’s having daily “party time!” dance parties with her son or strolling around downtown Charleston with her baby girl, being a mom to two young ones has only continued to energize Raven and her works. As she reflects on this chapter, her advice to her children as they grow up is to “surround yourself with people that keep you going and inspire you.”

Take a peek at her work here - and be sure to check out her newest 'Colors of Sunday’ Nest Series available on April 25!

Mother’s Day is coming up, and we are always in awe of badass moms doing things in AND out of the playroom. You have two children and a blossoming business. What is a “day in the life” like for you? How do you juggle it all?

I have great women around me, helping with my babies and loving husband. I  also remind myself that this is only for a season and I can paint when I'm in my  80s.

We like to think of ourselves as kids at heart, even as working moms and adults. How do you find fun at the end of a long day running your business and taking care of your kids? How are you still a kid at heart?

In my house most afternoons, my son and I turn off the lights, put on dance  music, and have “party” time. I highly recommend these balloons, they are a  “party” time must!

If you could give your children advice as they grow up and look to find their own passions, what would you tell them?

Try not to be too attached to the product and enjoy the process. Also, surround yourself with people that keep you going and inspire you.

Have you always been an independent artist, or did you have any other significant  jobs before starting your own business?

I spent time previously working in creative at Free People.

How has having children changed your viewpoint on work/life balance?

It has only made making art more important to me.

How does your personal life influence your paintings?

The colors of my daily life, and the energy. My work is such a reflection of my  day to day. Everything goes hand in hand. I find that is why it is so important to take good care of myself and try to stay present. It only helps my work.

For someone looking to start building their own art collection, what pieces from  your studio would you recommend they start with?

A print from my ‘Birds’ screen print collection.

Can you share any exciting collaborations or future plans for Raven Roxanne that  our community has to look forward to?

Last month, ten original pieces were installed in the iconic Central Park Boathouse. You can find my pieces placed all around the bar and dining areas. It is such an honor to be a part of that project, and I'm itching to get to the city to see the space in person.
